The Studio@620 presents a staged reading of a new work by playwright Sheila Cowley. Cowley is collaborating with actors and dancers to develop "Trio", a play that celebrates cycles of life as parents die and children have to take their place. Come experience this initial public offering of a unique multi-disciplinary performance, presented with support from the Saint Pete Arts Alliance.

"Trio" is written for three actors and three silent movement artists, set behind the scenes at a children’s theater. Every day, Tim bares his chest and Leslie kills him. Leslie’s mom is in the hospital, so she seeks distraction in her dad’s garage, devising a monster play for kids. Tim plays the monster as she wields a wooden sword, while a Trio of silent clowns create a magical world from found objects.

When an old college love appears, a three-way romantic triangle helps Tim and Leslie forge a way to face the real world, even if you’re only armed with a wooden sword.

"Trio" was developed through the Chicago Dramatists Script Lab, with workshops at the University of South Florida School of Theatre and Dance and a reading with New York’s Athena Theatre.

The cast features Becca McCoy, Derrick Phillips and Christopher Rutherford, and dancers Helen Hansen French, Crystal DelGiudice and Sean McDonald. Directed by Elizabeth Brincklow and choreographed by Paula Kramer.

Many thanks to the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance for funding this workshop, before Trio’s world premiere in Austin in 2018.

This staged reading is free, and will include an audience discussion.
